Private jaguar safaris on the Cuiaba River

When you visit Brazil on a wildlife holiday even if it involves a Jaguar Safari in the Pantanal you soon pick up on the fact that nearly all the local guides are full on birders and will take every opportunity to point out 'special' birds to their clients. As all birders know, if you want to maximise the variety of sightings and species you need to visit a diversity of habitats and altitudes in the company of an expert guide. This combination of higher altitude Cerrado plateau and Wetland habitat - without the need to travel too far in Brazil - is ideal for keen birders and those looking to see a diversity of landscapes and wildlife in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.

Safari Style: SMALL GROUP

Day 1

Brazil wildlife holiday Chapada dos Guimarães
Arrive into Cuiaba and transfer to Chapada dos Guimarães
Your private naturalist and expert birder will meet you off the mid-morning flight into Cuiaba Airport and then transfer you around 2 hours to the Chapada dos Guimarães, where you will overnight at the beautifully located ‘Pousada do Parque’

Accommodation : Pousada do Parque

Day 2

Where to see red and green macaws in Brazil
Walk the best birding trails in Chapada dos Guimarães
Early start and enjoy a private walk with your naturalist to the best birding locations at Chapada dos Guimarães. It is a large national park with many different trails and viewpoints so it is important to have an expert guide with you to focus on your objectives. Red-and-green Macaws can be seen around the cliffs at the falls, and Yellow-faced Parrot is possible along the dirt road to Cidade da Pedra.

Day 3

Best places to see giant anteater in Brazil
Morning birding then transfer to Pocone
Another early start and a focus on any birds we may have missed the previous day before a 4-5 hour transfer to Pocone and the start of the famous Transpantaneira unsealed road. You will see your first birds associated with the famous Pantanal wetlands, such as the huge Jabiru storks, many diferrent Ibis and Stork species and the omnipresent snail kites. This drier northern section of the road is also great habitat for Ocelot and Anteater.

Accommodation : Pousa Alegre Lodge

Day 4

Best places to see Hyacinth Macaws in Brazil
Transfer to Porto Jofre - the end of the road!
Very early morning safari around Pousa Alegre, looking for Tapir, Anteaters and Ocelot before starting the long drive south to Hotel Pantanal Norte located next to the Cuiaba river. Wildlife Trails is lucky to work with local Pantaneiro guides who have relatives with ranches along this road and they have protected certain tree species which the endangered Hyacinth Macaws prefer to nest in. Because they are private residences the viewing is very controlled and we have have the chance for great photographs without disturbing them.

Accommodation : Hotel Pantanal Norte

Days 5&6

Best places to see Jaguars in Brazil
Two days of private jaguar boat safaris
Two days of morning and afternoon private boat safaris in one of the best locations in the world to see Jaguars. There is also a chance to see Tapir, Giant River Otters, Black Howler Monkeys, Iguana, lots of Caimans and many beautiful birds attracted to the riverine forest.

Day 7

Brazil wildlife holidays Jaguar safari and birding
Drive back to Cuiaba to connect with your flight
Sadly, this is the end of your Pantanal birding tour and you will drive back north to Cuiaba to connect with your onward flight. If the flight is in the evening, we will have time to stop for lunch en route and look out for the ever playful Giant River Otters in the many water bodies we will pass during our car journey.
