Polar Bears, Belugas and Northern Lights
We have been running polar bear tours to Canada since 2003 but the northern lights are rarely seen during the peak polar bear months of October and November due to cloud cover. However, if you can travel in August and early September, not only do you have a good chance of clear skies and Aurora, you have the bonus of seeing Belugas swimming in the Hudson Bay. Finally, imagine also seeing the Northern Lights from the glass domed carriage on the overnight train from Churchill to Thompson. It’s all hear for you on this brand new polar bear and beluga whale adventure with Wildlife Trails and at a fabulous price!

PioneerDay 1
Arrive in Winnipeg and overnight at airport hotel
Relaxed evening to meet the group and your UK tour leader, who has been travelling to Churchill since 2006.
Overnight: The Grand Winnipeg

Day 2
Full day free in Winnipeg before overnight bus to Thompson
Downtown is just a short cheap taxi fare away and you can explore the French quarter, the Forks and museums before returning to board the bus from the airport.

Day 3
Arrive into Thompson and day to explore
Our bus will arrive into Thompson around 09:00 and we will have until the early evening to explore. The VIA train to Churchill departs at approximately 5pm.
Overnight: reclining sleep chair in standard class

Day 4
Arrive into Churchill. Afternoon town tour and Northern Lights tour
Stable weather patterns in August and September give us a much better chance for Northern Lights. The photo below is from November 2024 but that was very lucky!
Characterful B&B owned by locals

Day 5
Summer Tundra Buggy 6 hour excursion including lunch
The summer Tundra Buggy tours are shorter than the winter trips because the focus is different. In the summer there is no need to travel all the way to the edge of the ice as that is not where the bears will be. Instead the focus will be closer to the base looking for both belugas and polar bears

Day 6
Half-day 4X4 small group excursion to photograph resident wildlife
At approximately 09:00 you will be collected from your hotel for a full day ‘Road and Trails’ tour (please take your own water, hot drink and lunch). Chances to see Ptarmigan, Polar Bears, Red Fox, Arctic Hare, Snow Geese and if very lucky, maybe Gyr Falcons and Snowy Owls

Day 7
Half day small group Beluga Whale safari
We have worked with the best small boat whale watching companies in Churchill since 2004, so we know who to choose for best views as well as best practice. Be amazed at the number of Beluga whales which comes into the Hudson Bay by Churchill.

Day 8
Second 4X4 safaris photographing polar bears
We approach all our wildlife excursions in an ethical manner with safety always first priority for our clients. Some polar bears are more curious than others, and we don’t want our behaviour to change theirs. However it is thrilling to be able to stand next to the vehicle and photograph them at eye level. Evening departure on train to Thompson

Day 9
Arrive in Thompson and connect with the bus to Winnipeg
We arrive at around 11:00am and it is then a long bus journey back to Winnipeg with an arrival after midnight so make sure you have snacks and drinks.
Overnight: The Grand Winnipeg

Day 10
Connect with your onward flights from Winnipeg Airport
After a hearty breakfast you simply walk 100m from your hotel to the airport to catch your flight.
