Cloud Forest, Margays & Turtles

The timing of this Costa Rica wildlife holiday is crucial if you have a strong desire to see turtles. Tortuguero is one of the most important sites on the Western Hemisphere for the nesting of sea turtles. Four out of the seven sea turtle world species come to Tortuguero to nest, but because three of these species are highly endangered, there are only tours permitted to see the Green Turtles and these are managed by the park authorities. July to October is the best time to see the Green Tutles nesting, so this provides the window for our tour. As well as turtles, we visit the ‘real’ higher altitude cloud forests for sloth, monkeys and endemic birds like Orange-bellied Trogon. Here at Wildlife Trails we love to see what the animals are doing at night, so there are some very cool night walks for Costa Rica wildlife which comes alive in the dark.

DAY 1

ARRIVE IN SAN JOSE AND OVERNIGHT IN A LUXURY HOTEL

DAY 2

PRIVATE TRANSFER TO ARENAL VOLCANO

Arenal Volcano national park spreads over 120sq km. Rising from the San Carlos Plains, the majestic Arenal is one of Costa Rica’s most rewarding sights. Arenal ceased activity between the 13th and 16th centuries, and stayed inactive until July 29, 1968, when an earthquake awakened the sleeping giant. At the moment the volcano is not presenting any activity. Night walking tour looking for nocturnal mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Accommodation : Arenal Observatory Lodge

DAY 3

MARGAYS AND SLOTH TOURS

Very early start to try and glimpse the rare and elusive Margay before heading out straight away (packed breakfast included) on a small group Sloth tour. The aim of the trip is to see as many sloths as possible, but also we have good chances to see toucans, frogs, iguanas and monkeys.

DAY 4

CELESTE RIVER AND TENORIO VOLCANO HIKE

Leave at 7:00 a.m. from La Fortuna. After a typical breakfast in route to Rio Celeste, arrive at Tenorio Volcano National Park, where you will begin a 5-mile hike (approximately 4 hours) through the tropical rain forest. Arrive to “Los Teñideros” of the Rio Celeste, the site where two streams of crystalline water come together and form the heavenly color blue that gives the river its name.

DAY 5

DRIVE FROM ARENAL TO TO SAN RAMÓN

We leave Arenal and climb up to the beautiful Villa Blanca cloud forest hotel, which will be our base for the next 3 nights. Starting at dusk, an exceptional night walk takes place along the hotel’s comfortable trail network and is led by a nocturnal forest specialist guide. You’ll be provided with a flashlight and be led into the cloud forest to discover a world rarely seen by visitors to other parts of Costa Rica. You’ll see dozens of nocturnal species representing the countless variety of insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals that comprise this amazing jungle.

DAY 10

FOCUS ON GREEN TURTLES NESTING SITES

Although this is a free day and we can look at kayaking tour (park entrance fees not included) and a gentle walk into the very interesting town , our focus in the evening will be the turtles.
