Lemur Magic in the Forests of Madagascar

There is no doubt that the island of Madagascar is one of those stand out wildlife locations in the world, that captures the imagination of thousands of wildlife lovers and photographers around the world. Having been lucky enough to visit this wildlife jewelon a few occasions, I can say hand on heart that I enjoyed it all; the lemurs, the forests, the chameleons, the local villagers and even the long tiring car journeys inbetween the fragmented wildlife hotspots. However, if you ask me to design the best photography tour of Madagascar for Lemurs and make it more way more efficient with regards to less time on the road and more time with the Lemurs, then this is exactly the Madagascan safari I would put together for you. This is absolutely the best of the south west forests and eastern forests for the lemur photography and we are avoiding at least three full days of vehicle lockdown for a similar tour by road only.

DAY 1

ARRIVE IN THE CAPITAL AND OVERNIGHT AT A NEARBY HOTEL

On arrival in the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo (Tana), you will meet your local guide and naturalist and we will have a short private transfer to the ‘San Cristobal Hotel’ for our overnight accommodation

Accommodation : San Cristobal

DAY 2

FLY FROM IVATA AIRPORT TO TULEAR IN THE SOUTH WEST

After breakfast you will be transferred 10 minutes back to the airport to connect with a standard jet flight to Tulear. On arrival, you will be met and transferred 45 minutes to the beautifully located ‘Les Dunes’. In the late afternoon, you will enjoy a sunset visit to the surreal and beautiful Spiny Forest, where both wildlife and the Baobab trees will be the star attractions.

Accommodation : Les Dunes

DAY 3

DRIVE FROM IFATY TO ISALO WITH A STOP AT ZOMBITSE FOREST

Sunrise visit to the Spiny Forest with your private naturalist before being transferred 4-5 hours to Isalo National Park. En route you will stop at Zombitse Forest national park. Here, more than other locations, we can see the start contrast between Zombitze and the surrounding area; which is almost completely denuded of trees. However this little island remains a sanctuary for rare endemic birds, lemurs and reptiles. We have the chance to see Siftaka, Red-fronted lemurs and the nocturnal sportive lemur

Accommodation : Jadin de Roy

DAY 4

MORNING VISIT TO ISALO THEN TRANSFER TO AMBALAVAO

Early morning guided visit to Isalo National Park before transferring by car 4-5 hours to Ambalavao. Our accommodation here gives us easy morning time access (when there are no tour groups!) to Anja community park, which is famous for its photogenic ring tailed lemurs.

DAY 5

FULL DAY AVAILABLE TO PHOTOGRAPH THE RING TAILED LEMURS

Full day available for visits to Anja (Anjaha) park; a small community run park, with beautiful scenery, specialist plants adapted to the dry south and several troops of ring-tailed lemurs. There is a short well maintained trail which winds past impressive rocks, topped by waiting lemurs, to a sacred cliff where there is supposed to be an inaccessible tomb

DAY 6

PRIVATE CHARTER PLANE TRANSFER TO TAMARAVE

Final morning visit to Anja before driving to Fianarantsoa to take a private charter flight in a Cessna Grand Caravan to Tamarave. On arrival you will be met and transferred to ‘Palmarium Lodge’ for your overnight accommodation

Accommodation : Palmarium Lodge

DAYS 7&8

TWO FULL DAYS LEMUR WATCHING IN PALMARIUM RESERVE

Day time and night-time walks to explore the incredibly diverse Palmarium reserve, with the chance to see multiple species of Lemurs and the legendary Aye Aye. Obviously, the lemurs in this reserve are habituated to the presence of humans and this creates a lot more open and creative photographic opportunities.

DAY 9

DRIVE 4-5 HOURS FROM PALMARIUM TO ANDASIBE

After breakfast will drive 4-5 hours to Andasibe. Arrive at ‘Mantadia Lodge’. We have time for both an introductory walk in the afternoon, followed by a night walk with expert local naturalist. Easy level walks where we are especially careful at night to avoid trip hazards.

Accommodation : Mantadia Lodge

DAY 10

MORNING WALK IN ANDASIBE AND SECOND NIGHT TIME WALK

Early morning walk in the Special Reserve of Andasibe (Analamazaotra) to hear the dawn chorus of the Indri. This 810 hectare reserve is unique with its endemic fauna and flora and contains a wide variety of orchids, canopy, and endemic animals like chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds. In the afternoon we switch from primates to reptiles, as we visit a highly regarded community project at Vohimana Reserve.

DAY 11

VISIT LEMUR ISLAND FOR ACTION EVERYWHERE

Today we enjoy a second morning visit to Analamazaotra forest. In the late afternoon we will visit Lemur Island. On Lemur Island, you get a totally different experience, as the Lemurs are habituated to humans. This tiny reserve in the Andasibe National Park is inhabited by four species of lemurs- the bamboo lemur, the black & white ruffed lemur, brown lemur and one Diademed Sifaka

DAY 12
