Gorilla Trek and Volcano Climb for Adventure Seekers

For our return to Uganda and Rwanda to celebrate my 40th birthday I was keen to bring an adventerous element to the trip and as well as camping in many of the beautiful national parks, we also included a few more strenous activities on top of the Gorilla Trekking we did in Nkuringo. These included paddling across Lake Mutanda, walking with the Batwa tribals at Magahinga and the absolute highlight of a full day trek up the beautiful Mount Sabinyo, which stands at an impressive 3600M. Not only did this provide us with the elation of achieving our goals, but it also took us away from some of the more mainstream locations on the Uganda wildlife circuit and provided more village life and colour into our Uganda wildlife holiday.

DAY 1

ARRIVE INTO ENTEBBE AIRPORT AND TRANSFER TO YOUR NEARBY HOTEL

On arrival at Entebbe international airport you will be met and transferred to ‘The Boma Hotel’ for your overnight accommodation. If you arrive in the morning you can explore the nearby Botanical gardens with the chance to see many different bird species and the resident Black and white colobus monkeys.

Accommodation : The Boma Hotel

DAY 2

DRIVE FROM ENTEBBE TO LAKE MBURO WITH A STOP AT THE EQUATOR

After breakfast you will be picked up by your driver/naturalist in the Landcruiser and drive west to Lake Mburo national park. There will be time to make a short stop at the Equator, before driving into the heart of the park and checking into the rustic, but charming Arcadia cottages. Arrive in time for an afternoon boat safari or game drive inside the park. In the evening we will have an adventurous night time safari looking for Leopard and other nocturnal wildlife.

Accommodation : Arcadia Cottages

DAY 3

DRIVE FROM LAKE MBURO TO MGAHINGA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we have a long drive to Kisoro; where we can stop and visit the local markets before checking into a charming lodge just a few km’s away from the entrance to Magahinga national park. This is very much our gateway to adventure, with multiple activities available from here, including ‘walking with the Batwa’, Golden Monkey treks, Gorilla Treks (if they are on the Ugandan side!) and full day Volcano treks

Accommodation : Mondi Lodge

DAY 4

HALF-DAY GOLDEN MONKEY TREK IN MGAHINGA NATIONAL PARK

Many people who visit Uganda never have the opportunity to see this beautiful primate, as it is quite shy and required a team of trackers (just like for the Gorillas) to head out in the morning and locate the group. This means that you can head off on your guided trek knowing where they are and getting your camera and video equipment ready for an exhilarating encounter. The trek normally lasts around half a day, so you have time to return for a relaxing afternoon at your lodge and prepare for the Volcano summit attempt.

Accommodation : Mondi Lodge

DAY 5

EARLY START FOR THE 8-10 HOUR SUMMIT ATTEMPT ON MOUNT SABYINYO

One of the challenges of Sabinyo is the two peaks (teeth) you must ascend and descend to get to the final climb for the summit. Energy wise we had a few miles in our legs from the 2 day Nkuringo walking safari and Gorilla Trekking, but I in particular found the wooden well spaced out ladders a challenge when descending. That makes the final climb and summit even more rewarding and although mist obscured the views at the very top, we had enjoyed some good ones en route, including the chance to see rare plant species such as Giant Lobelia and Giant Ferns. We took 5 hours to get to the summit and 3 hours to get down, so an early start is imperative so you don’t lose the light on the return leg.

Accommodation : Mondi Lodge

DAY 6

RELAXING GUIDED DUGOUT CROSSING OF LAKE MUTANDA THEN SHORT HIKE TO LODGE AT NKURINGO

Mixed activity day with some stunning scenery to enjoy en route.; as you paddle across Lake Mutanda and then climb gentle cultivated hills up to the Nteko ridge where you will check into your mountain top accommodation. There is no rush for this section of your trip, because as well as your local walking guide, you will have two boatman with you to help with the paddling and allow you to take a few photographs as you cross the lake.

Accommodation : Nkuringo Bwindi gorilla lodge

DAY 7

YOU WILL GO GORILLA TREKKING WITH ONE OF THE 3 FAMILIES CLOSE TO NKURINGO

This section of forest is home to the three Nkuringo families of Mountain Gorillas from where the Lodge provides a prime access point to the start of the amazing activity. The Lodge has panoramic views of the majestic volcanoes of the Virunga chain, across the escarpment into the Albertine Rift Valley within the DRC Congo. You will start your gorilla trekking in Nkuringo with a gentle walk down to the park headquarters for a safety and health briefing, before being transferred to the start of your gorilla trek. It is not unusual in Nkuringo to trek down to the Gorillas, rather than a steep climb up which is normal when staying in Buhoma.

Accommodation : Nkuringo Bwindi gorilla lodge

DAY 8

DRIVE FROM NKURINGO TO QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Time for a change of activity and scenery as we drive away from the primary and secondary forest of Bwindi Forest and head towards the most famous Savannah national park in Uganda; Queen Elizabeth. We choose a funky mid-range safari lodge for your accommodation and provide you with a variety of activities (all entrance fees included) so you can truly appreciate the beauty of the park.

Accommodation : Queen Elizabeth bush camp

DAY 9

MORNING GAME DRIVE AND AFTERNOON BOAT SAFARI ON THE KAZINGA CHANNEL

Early morning jeep safari inside Queen Elizabeth national park, when you will enter via a different gate and explore another key area of the reserve. Late afternoon boat safari along the famous Kazinga Channel, looking for Hippo’s, Elephant and a great variety of bird species. By taking the later departure, we come back to shore around 1 hour before the park shuts and this is an ideal time to head to ‘Leopards Loop’ for a chance to see one of the 2 big cats of Queen Elizabeth

Accommodation : Queen Elizabeth bush camp

DAY 10

FINAL MORNING GAME DRIVE AND THEN DRIVE BACK TO ENTEBBE

You will enjoy one final game drive at Queen Elizabeth before driving 5-6 hours back to Entebbe where you will overnight once more at the Boma. If you have time, you can visit some of the local markets as your drive through small village communities, or head to Lake Victoria for a beautiful lunch next to the water.

Accommodation : The Boma Hotel

A life changing experience

The main part of the trip was gorilla trekking in Uganda and Wildlife Trails had organised this very well and provided me with a comprehensive list of what to take which was great. The lodges were ely and seeing the other animals in Queen Elizabeth National Park, brilliant. Wildlife Trails organised the trip, including my flight very well. They also booked a hotel for me in Entebbe for the first and last night before flying home.

Uganda and Rwanda wildlife experience

A totally stunning holiday with an excellent driver/guide who had brilliant wildlife and local knowledge, excellent driving skills, great attention to detail and a good sense of humour. The seness to and variety of wildlife seen was exceptional and well beyond any expectations and we have been on many many wildlife holidays. The local people were lovely and the food was worthy of michelin stars. A very well planned itinerary ensuring we had enough time at each destination. Everything I asked for was included and all the lodges were at exactly the level requested. The local operator was also excellent and we could not have wished for better service.

★★★★★
Gorilla trekking and safari in Uganda and Rwanda

We had the most AMAZING 15 days in Uganda with a few days in Rwanda on safari, including the usual jeep rides but also hiking, biking, horse back riding, boating and trekking. Uganda is the ot;sleeper" country for an African visit- not only is it incredibly lush and beautiful with welcoming smiles from those along our path but is free of tourist congestion. Such a pleasure to be on the plains with the animals, completely absorbed by the natural beauty without the distractions of other safari vehicles. The collection of wildlife is diverse, fascinating and beautiful. The gorilla trekking was the highlight personally but not far behind was the rest of Uganda! Allan arranges a truly memorable trip for us. He was a pleasure to deal with and was quite patient with the many questions and changes to our personalized itinerary. The guide/naturalist he selected, Martin Okot, was PERFECT for us; not only thorough in knowledge over a wide range of subjects from plants, birds, butterflies to primates but also on history and politics. This made for wonderful conversation throughout our time together. Martin managed a few typical travel hiccups, like a delayed bag, slight modifications in the itinerary, flat tires with furor and speed. I really felt that he was fighting for us, providing the most favorable time in Uganda- a great ambassador for Uganda.
