Photography Wildlife Holidays 2022
Wildlife Trails has several wildlife photography tours in some of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich locations on this planet. We work with the award-winning wildlife photographer, Trai Anfield, to bring you safari photography holidays designed to get you close to the action and also to support local charities which are active and effective in the field at protecting big cats, gorillas and wild bears.
What to Expect with Wildlife Trails
Our wildlife photography tours with Trai Anfield focus on quality time at the best locations for photography, a low number of photographers per safari vehicle, purchasing extra seats for luggage where required and expert photographic tuition to suit all abilities from Trai. This is given both while out on safari and of course back at the wildlife lodge or camp when editing and processing images. In some cases as with our Iberian Lynx tour, or Zimanga Ultimate South African photography safari.
Wildlife Photography holidays in Europe 2022
We have two wildlife photography tours led by Trai Anfield in Europe for 2022. The first departure is in January for the chance to photograph the Dalmatian Pelican in Greece and it is possible to combine this photography trip with an extension to Spain where you can join Trai in specially designed photographic hides on our Iberian Lynx tour which is limited to 4 clients only. Later in the year, we try to time our Finland wildlife photography tour just as the brown bears wake from their hibernation and you have a chance to photograph them in the snow, as well as wolves and wolverines.
Wildlife Photography holidays in Africa 2022
Both Wildlife Trails and Trai Anfield have a long history of organising bespoke and small group wildlife photography tours in Africa. We have used our mutual knowledge to focus on the destinations which we feel offer some of the most exciting wildlife to photograph while on safari. Experience the thrill of an Uganda gorilla trekking holiday with the chance to photograph Silverbacks and baby gorillas or join Trai in the world-famous Zimanga reserve in South Africa for night-time hide photography, with nocturnal visits by lions and leopards. We are also immensely proud to support Big Cat conservation in Kenya with our Mara Predator Big Cat conservation safari, which donates 1000 USD for each photographer on safari.
Wildlife Photography holidays in North America 2022
Our Alaska photography tours visit both Kodiak Island and Katmai National Park for the chance to photograph the largest brown bears in the world. Trai takes a small group of 6 photographers from Anchorage to Kodiak and then after a private fly-in bear viewing safari to Kodiak Island you will make a stunning floatplane journey to the only permanent accommodation permitted in Katmai, the world-famous Katmai wilderness lodge with its access to world-class bear viewing in Alaska and opportunities for stunning photographs as you ‘Walk with the giant bears of Katmai’.
Safari photography holidays in South America 2022
There are many opportunities on this beautiful wild continent to take part in wildlife photography tours. We organise Orca watching wildlife holidays in Patagonia, Argentina to see Orca whales hunting seals on the beach, as well as our small group Puma safaris in Torres Del Paine. Brazil is no doubt one of the most epic countries for wildlife photography holidays and in 2022, Trai will be leading a Maned Wolf and Wild Jaguar safari in the Cerrado and Pantanal.
Safari photography holidays in Asia 2022
Both India and Borneo offer stunning options for safari photography holidays in National Parks such as Bandhavgarh tiger sanctuary, Nagarhole National Park to see the legendary Black Panther and Deramakot or Tabin wildlife reserve in Borneo for the chance to see Clouded Leopard. One of the favourite small group India photography holidays is combining the colourful festival of Holi with visits to the Taj Mahal, Kaziranga National Park for Rhinos and an Indian tiger safari at Bandhavgarh National Park.
A good friend of Wildlife Trails and superb photographer, Chris Brunskill returned from Laikipia wilderness camp last spring, and his amazing images of Giza have been published all around the world. There are many reasons why a beautiful cat like Giza becomes less shy and is seen more regularly by the safari vehicles and of course this can also change rapidly, due to terrotorial fights or other factors which might lead to her moving away or keeping a lower profile.
Allan then went out with a group in September 2023 and enjoyed 4 stunning consecutive days with Giza, with everything from her at night in a tree on a kill, witnessing the start of a hunt as she ran flat out near the river, having her walk metres from our vehicle and two seperate river crossings right in front of us – it was hard to believe it was happening and we had to remind ourselves to breathe!
So now its time to do it all over again next year. Whose up for it?

This is a Botswana safari I have been thinking about designing for years and I am so excited that it has finally come to fruition. The annual Zebra migration through Botswana does not attract as much attention as the famous Wildebeest migration in East Africa, but in its own way it is equally special and also attracts the attention of many of Botswana’s apex predators.
Once the rains end and the salt pans at Makgadikgadi dry up (around April/May), tens of thousands of zebra migrate across the National Park to the banks of the Boteti River valley and remain there until the rains start again in late October/early November.
Our beautiful Botswana wildlife lodge, Leroo La Tau, is located on the banks of the Boteti River Valley so this significant and overwhelming migration arrives on their ‘doorstep’ during April/early May (depending on the years rain) and will remain in that area for the next 6 months or so.
As well as 4 nights at Leroo La Tau to witness the Zebra migration, we will also spend 3 nights at Camp Xakanaxa which is located on the boundary between the Okavango Delta and the world famous Moremi game reserve. It is one of the few camps which allows the perfect balance of water based activities and game drives at the same time. Moremi is one of the best places in Botswana to see lions, leopards and African wildlife dogs.
We will have large well-equipped game vehicles for a maximum group size of 6 people so each guest has a window seat and plenty of room for their camera equipment. This tour will be characterized by maximising time in the field to take advantage of all available wildlife viewing opportunities.

A Galpagos cruise will be a one off lifetime event for most visitors to the most famous natural history islands in the world, so your choice of not only the boat, but the structure of your itinerary is critical to the success of your Galpagos small boat cruise. Yes, choosing a small boat provides access to several island where the larger boats are not allowed due to strict environmental laws, but it is the day to day structure, overnight long journeys between islands and often being the first to arrive at the key sites that makes this Wildlife Trails Galapagos cruise really stand out.

Iberian Lynx Wildlife Tour – one of the rarest cats in the world and have generally been regarded as very challenging to view in the wild. However a combination of recent conservation initiatives in Spain, depopulation of rural Spain and a strong passion for this beautiful cat from local wildlife guides, has resulted in increased knowledge of its few remaining strongholds. Wildlife Trails has teamed up with a local Spanish wildlife company with many years of leading successful tours to this beautiful region.
Allan did this exact trip in January 2023, so can provide you with detailed information on both the setup of the hides, chances of see this stunning feline (sightings on 3 out of 4 days including mating pairs!). Everything has been done here on this private land to the highest professional level, from the quality of the photographic glass, the location of the hides to see the Lynx walking straight towards the camera and the background work in partnership with WWF, to improve the local rabbit population and encourage more breeding pairs in the area. There is quite high demand for these dates and I am a little late with this newsletter due to my African travels, so if you are interested, please contact us ASAP.

Our Red Panda wildlife holiday is meticously designed to maximise your time in the field for observation and photography. Using superb local trackers and guides in a similar fashion to the gorilla trekking guides in Africa, we first locate the Red Panda’s, transmit that information back to our private group in the homestay and then sensitively approach them to enjoy an intimate and productive wildlife viewing session in the company of these amazing mammals. Most of the Red Panda trekking on this India wildlife holiday will take place on the India/Nepal border in Singalila National Park.
The ingenious assortment of cool climate, generous precipitation and the right mix of warmth and humidity throughout the year have shaped the unique eco-system of Singalila National Park in the northern most reaches of Darjeeling district of West Bengal and the adjacent forest in Ilam, Nepal. The wide range of vegetation ranging from subtropical forests and temperate coniferous forests which exists in the altitude range 2000 to 3500 meters has made the Singalila National Park a prominent biodiversity hotspot. This sub-temperate Himalayan broadleaf ecosystem is home to wide array of elusive Himalayan wildlife such as Red Panda, Asiatic Black Bear, Clouded leopard, Common Leopard, Melanistic Leopard, Leopard Cat, Himalayan Sherow, Himalayan Musk deer, Melanistic Barking deer, Himalayan Brow Goral, Yellow-throated Marten, Himalayan Palm Civet, Bhutan Giant Flying Squirrel and many more.

Very few people in the world attempt to see wild tigers and snow leopards in the same trip. This bespoke Wildlife Trails tiger and snow leopard safari takes Allan and a small group of adventurous souls back to Ladakh where he was lucky enough to see 7 snow leopards on his first visit in 2012. Since then he has returned to both Ladakh and visited Spiti Valley and always enjoyed excellent encounters. Some of our regular clients have asked for more comfortable accommodation than basic tents or homestays, so this small group Indian wildlife holiday specifically addresses that issue and takes your Christmas and New Year celebrations to another level!

The Wildebeest Migration through the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem is one of the largest mass movements on earth. Thousands of wildebeests, zebras and Thompson’s gazelles migrate throughout the year always seeking for fresh grass and water. They follow an annual pattern through both Ecosystems, with broadly predictable timing, however their movement does depend on rain.
Tanzania has two rainy seasons – the ‘long rains’ between March and May and the ‘short rains’ between November and December. After the short rainfalls, the wildebeest migration is expected to arrive from the north in late November / early December on the short-grass plains of the south. These grass plains include southern Serengeti, located in Serengeti National Park; and Ndutu Area, located inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Through January, February and March, the wildebeest migration is expected to stay on these southern plains as the grasses are very nutritious and most wildebeest calves will be born in a coordinated bound of calving during February and into early March. Many regular safari goers to Tanzania consider this the best time to visit Tanzania for wildlife.

Sri Lanka leopard safaris in Yala national park remain one of the best big cat experiences found in Asia. On an island where they are the top predator bar none, they are much more diurnal in behaviour than in India’s wildlife sanctuaries, which thus provides much better opportunities for our wildlife photography holidays to Sri Lanka. We have been travelling to Yala since 2002 and the safari camp we have hand picked has been chosen because it allows us to access the park from other gates and not have to queue at the main entrance gate which serves the larger hotels. Although we are likely to experience a Yala national park from decades ago, when there were only 10 to 12 jeeps driving around the 5 different zones. Each traveller will have access to a window seat and plenty of space for their camera equipment in a vehicle adapted for wildlife photographers. Ten jeep safaris in Yala will allow us to experience the entire park and focus on leopards, wild elephants and sloth bears.
Yala National Park consists of dry-mixed evergreen forests and scrublands along with open grasslands, water holes, brackish water lagoons and riverine forests. This park’s diverse habitat supports large numbers of mammals, such as spotted, barking and mouse deer, sambar, wild boar, water buffalo and the endangered sloth bear. This is also one of the best places in the country to see wild elephant and the rare leopard. Large water holes and lagoons support the high density of endangered crocodiles. You can also see large flocks of migratory and resident birds—142 species of birds have been recorded in the park. Of particular note is the rare black-necked stork, the largest bird in the country.
Please note, that this tour can easily be extended on a private basis to visit other wildlife sanctuaries or cultural locations of personal interest.
