Tour Highlights

  • 7 full days of Jaguar boat safaris on the Paraguay and Cuiaba rivers
  • Maximum of 4 clients per boat
  • Expert local naturalist and boatman
  • Small scale lodges located in wilderness areas

This really is the ultimate Jaguar safari in Brazil, as we take you to two famous Brazilian rivers, each with a high density of wild jaguars. Less people visit the Paraguay river and the Taiamã Ecological Reserve where you will be taking your boat safaris. In the last few years there have been more Jaguar sightings closer to our riverside lodge on the banks of the Paraguay and we can use the latest sightings reports to plan our daily activities. We have a large spacious boat designed for 12 but only carrying 4 Wildlife Trails clients; who will enjoy a huge amount of space for their comfort and all important camera equipment. After 4 nights on the Paraguay river we drive back to Cuiaba and start our journey down the Transpantaneira road. We focus on two different habitats along this road, the drier north where you are more likely to see Tapir, Giant Anteaters and Ocelot and then the end of the road for our Jaguar boat safaris; where we are also likely to see Giant river otters, Howler monkeys, Caiman and Capybara. To have the best possible chance to see Jaguars we again have a large boat with just a few clients in and we go out as early as possible and take packed lunches. Which means that we are still viewing and photographing Jaguars, while the other groups are back at the lodge or on their houseboats having siestas.

Safari Style: SMALL GROUP

Day 1

Jaguar safari in the Pantanal on the Paraguay river
Take the morning flight from Sao Paulo to Cuiaba
On arrival you will be met by your naturalist guide and transferred 220 km to the town of Cáceres to embark in a private boat to travel downstream along the Paraguay river, bird and wildlife spotting along the river, and photographing the giant water lilly pads

Accommodation : Hotel Baiazinha

Days 2-4

Best pantanal jaguar safaris on the paraguay river
Three full days of private Jaguar safari on the Paraguay river
Private boat safaris to explore the Paraguay river and the northern side of the Taiama Ecological Reserve. Early start, after breakfast embark in our motorized boat and travel downstream along the Paraguay river to the Estação Ecológica do Taiama to search for JAGUARS. In the last few years more Jaguars have been seen close to the lodge, rather than in the reserve, so your local guide will focus on the best areas to see them.

Accommodation : Hotel Baiazinha

Day 5

Best wildlife lodges in the Pantanal
Drive from your lodge to Pousada Alegre on the Transpantaneira road
After breakfast, transfer to Pousada Alegre (a journey of approximately 5 hours). During the drive, a portion on undealed roads, as well as hundreds of birds, caimans and maybe even the odd Neotropical Otter, you will enjoy the change of scenery as the Pantanal landscape, dominated by large ranches, comes into view.

Accommodation : Pousada Alegre

Day 6

Best places to see Giant Anteaters in Brazil
Early morning and night time vehicle safaris
Full day of very early morning safaris looking for Giant Anteater and Tapir. Late afternoon safaris followed by nocturnal drive looking for wildlife such as Ocelot and crab eating Foxes. Opportunities to walk, take gentle horse-back safaris or explore areas by safari vehicle.

Accommodation : Pousada Alegre

Day 7

Best wildlife lodges in the Pantanal
Drive south to the end of the Transpantaneira road to Porto Jofre
Early morning safari close to the lodge before driving 3 hours (with stops) to the end of the Transpantaneira road where you will find the best lodge on the Cuiaba River - Hotel Pantanal Norte. No small houseboat on the river for our clients, where you can hardly move and there are many mosquitoes around. We have chosen the best quality accommodation on the Cuiaba river and with its extensive gardens, swimming pool and private jetty's just a stones throw away from your private bungalows; you couldn't be in a better place to enjoy your Pantanal jaguar safari.

Accommodation : Hotel Pantanal Norte

Days 8-11

Best place to see wild jaguars in Brazil
Four full days of private boat safaris on the Cuiaba river
Four full days of morning and afternoon small group boat safaris in one of the best locations in the world to see Jaguars. There is also a chance to see Tapir, Giant River Otters, Black Howler Monkeys, Iguana, lots of Caimans and some beautiful birds. Our intention is to be out all day with packed lunches to maximise our chance of incredible Jaguar encounters, but also to profit from fewer boats on the river during the afternoon siesta of the other groups.

Accommodation : Hotel Pantanal Norte

Day 12

Best place to see giant river otters in Brazil on a Pantanal jaguar safari
Drive back from Porto Jofre to Cuiaba and overnight at a good quality hotel
We can have a relaxed breakfast and final walk around the grounds where there is sometimes a pair of nesting Hyacinth Macaws before getting in our minibus and driving back to Cuiaba. We will stop at one of the riverside lodges for lunch and arrive at our hotel early evening.

Accommodation : Hotel Deville
