Sri Lanka safari - Camping at Wilpattu and Yala national parks

Sri Lanka safari - the magic of camping safaris in Wilpattu and Yala
In the very early days of this country's tourism industry just a few Sri Lanka wildlife lodges dominated the sector and if visitors wanted to enjoy a leopard safari at Yala national park, they had to stay at quality lodges like Jet Wing's safari lodge. This fantastic property, which was tragically destroyed with much loss of life during the 2004 tsunami, was located in a real wilderness area and it was not uncommon to see wild elephants and spotted deer in the grounds, as you climbed into your jeep ready for the morning safari. As the industry matured not all properties adopted the same wilderness feel, with a focus more on comfort, swimming pools and leisure activities. So for old school safari aficionado’s (like ourselves) it was a very welcome development when several local Sri Lanka safari operators were given permission to set up tented camps inside the national parks. Yala national park and Uda Walawe national park were the first two wildlife sanctuaries to be developed in this way and the safari experience on offer was intimate; with simple tented camps inside the parks providing the wilderness experience and faster access to the key wildlife locations inside the park. Unfortunately camping safaris are not permitted in Sri Lanka's national parks anymore, but several operators have been given permission to set up camps in the buffer areas. You really need to ask the direct question to your ground agents as to where these camps are actually set up, as sadly some are placed in areas that are noisy due to the proximity of local villages or nearby roads. We can assure our clients that our camping safaris in Wilpattu and Yala national parks have a true wilderness setting and provide a Sri Lanka safari experience that will live long in the memory.
