India wildlife tour looking for Tigers, Leopards and Lions
14 days from £2840*
India wildlife tour with safaris looking for Tigers, Leopards, Lions and lesser cats.
This itinerary combines Ranthambhore with our ‘secret' leopard destination in southern Rajasthan, then travelling onward to Sasan Gir in Gujurat for lions. Although leopards are quite widely spread throughout India, and resident in the same regions as the tigers (and lions) they are not easy to see when their smaller size puts them at a disadvantage. At Ranthambhore the healthy tiger population spread through all the zones (more cubs again this season) pushes the leopards to the outskirts, inside the park you will find a great diversity of mammals, birds and reptiles, from tiny chinkara to the larger nilgai antelope, as well as herds of spotted and sambar deer, alongside langur, wild boar and marsh mugger crocodiles in the parks three main lakes.
Heading south to Jodhpur and then off the beaten track in to rural Rajasthan you can find yourself in a surprising leopard hotspot (forgive the pun!). It was a good few years ago that we first learnt of this area, in fact not a National Park or even a Wildlife Sanctuary just an area of wilderness where the leopards have found sufficient habitat and prey and are largely tolerated. The whole safari experience is very different from our usual wildlife tours, with much greater flexibility to search for the Leopards at the optimum time, with earlier mornings and much later evening safaris. This is a beautiful area and as well as Leopards there is a good chance of Hyena, Sloth Bear and some of the lesser cats. There are also two large dams in the area, which are good locations to visit on the way back from morning safaris to look for any early arrivals of migratory birds.
Although rather out on a limb relative to the more famous Indian wildlife parks in the north and centre of the country, Gir is a special park and the last stronghold of one of the rarest and most endangered big cats in the world: the Asiatic Lion. Add to that one of the highest densities of Leopards found in India and you have several reasons to make this park a must see. As well as Lions and Leopards this dry teak forest is home to Sambar & Spotted (Cheetal) Deer, Nilgai Antelope, Wild Pig, Common Langur, and a variety of other mammals. It also attracts a huge variety of birds including Collared Scops & Mottled Wood Owls, and Painted Sand grouse, and both Marsh Muggers and water birds can be spotted at the nearby Kamleshwar Dam.
