India wildife tour visiting Kaziranga and Manas in Assam - fewer tourists, greater diversity of wildlife.

Wildlife Trails first visited Kaziranga in 2002 as part of an Indian wildlife holiday to the north east, which took in several National Parks. There has been considerable success in the conservation of the one horned rhino within Kaziranga  – it remains unrivalled in India for rhino sightings (only Chitwan in Nepal compares). Other relative ‘strongholds’ still have populations numbering just 20-100 individual rhinos.  The Hoolock Gibbon can be found in the forests here on the higher ground; they are the only ape found on the sub-Indian continent and can be very vocal at times which is a highly rewarding experience to visitors. The tiger population in Kaziranga is difficult to calculate, and due to the elephant grass at certain times of the year remains equally difficult to view.

Manas is regularly discussed amongst those with a passion for wildlife, especially the older generation who were lucky enough to have seen the park at its former peak.  A recovery is well under way and the park is once again quite rightly, high on the list of India’s premier wildlife locations to visit, as part of your Indian wildlife tour.  One of the great attractions of Manas is the variety of methods of viewing wildlife and enjoying the magnificent scenery all around. Jeep safaris allow you to see large areas of the park, but the more peaceful and intimate boat rides on the Manas River offer the chance to observe resident wildlife as you gently float down the river. There are also excellent Elephant Safaris available at Mathanguri. Finally, there are marvellous jungle trails to walk along the river where you can do some excellent birding or track animals from their pugmarks and spores.  You could extend this wilderness experience with some time trekking inside Nameri, and visiting a location for Gangetic dolphin en route. Join Wildlife Trails on this India wildlife tour of the north east, as we visit two very special wildlife parks and stay in the best Indian wildlife lodges.
