Canada wildlife holiday with grizzly bear viewing at Knight Inlet and Orcas at Johnstone Strait
7 days from £1340* 1 review
Canada wildlife holiday: Grizzly Bear Safari and Whale Watching tour focusing on the wildlife rich north east coast of Vancouver Island. The Grizzly Bear viewing at Knight Inlet is some of the best in Canada; but you also have nearby Johnstone Strait with its world famous Orca (Killer Whale) viewing and stunning scenery. We base you at a stunning wilderness lodge, where Otters and Black Bears are regularly seen and you can even be picked up from their private dock for some of these excursions.
The most cost effective option for visiting Knight Inlet is a day trip by boat from northeast Vancouver Island. The itinerary below includes accommodation at a ture Canadian wilderness lodge, situated in a secluded cove near Port McNeill, right on the doorstep of Johnstone Strait, the best place in the world to see Orcas in the wild. Whale watching excursions and Knight Inlet day trips both pick-up right from the lodge’s dock making it a fantastic one stop destination for the best bear and whale watching opportunities British Columbia has to offer. The boat journey from the lodge to Knight Inlet takes about 2 hours each way but this is very much part of the experience and you have the chance to see a lot of wildlife en route. You are surrounded by spectacular scenery throughout the journey, and it is not unusual to encounter a variety of wildlife including whales, dolphins, porpoises, black bears, and bald eagles en-route.
The local operator who conducts the brown bear safaris at Knight Inlet is highly regarded for its ethical approach to viewing the bears and attracting some of the best wildlife guides on the island. Small groups on these bear safari to Knight Inlet allow everyone to be able to ask questions of the guides and switching from the motor cruiser to a unpowered floating skiff (the guide helps tp push this) provides a more natural way of viewing the bears and keeps any noise disturbance to the animals to a bear minimum. Because the guides will not approach too close to the brown or black bears we suggest a minimum zoom lens of 300mm to be able to photograph the brown bears clearly.
This is a great Canada wildlife holiday for visitors to Vancouver Island on a budget and who want the freedom to self-drive and visit some of the many beautiful coves and inlets which are located all the way up the east coast of the Island. It is also a great option for people looking to stay in a true Canadian wilderness lodge, far from the noise of the busier towns such as Campbell River and Port Hardy.
