Best Indian Wildlife Lodges - No 5, Dhikala Forest Bungalow, Corbett National Park
Wildlife Trails first visited Corbett in 1999 after a 3 week stay in Ranthambhore national park, visiting old friends and planning the start of our business soon to be called 'Tiger Trails'. We were already aware of the legend of Jim Corbett and were keen to walk in his footsteps, as we searched for tigers and wild elephants in this incredibly photogenic park.
One of the real highlights of Corbett is that you can actually stay inside the park in forest bungalows (not common in India); the most famous of which are located in prime tiger habitat at Dhikala, which consists of large open meadow and thick forest stands. This was the days before the electric fence which now surround it and when you could walk out of your rustic accommodation (some are nearly 100 years old!), into the garden and look down onto the magnificent Ramganga river. Look long enough and you may see a large herd of Elephants crossing, or an excitable group of river otters hunting the plentiful fish; or maybe even the magnificent Royal Bengal Tiger, spring out of the grasslands to attack a male Sambar drinking at the rivers edge; as we did back in 2006!
Any accommodation managed by the park authorites will be a little rough around the edges, so if it is luxury you are after, then choose one of the multitude (too many in our opinion!) of lodges located outside the park. However genuine wildlife enthusiasts take note, to visit Corbett but not stay in Dhikala is to miss out on the heart and soul of this park, as well as on the of the best tiger safaris in India; whether you take the jeep or elephant option, which are both available.
Why not experience the Dhikala magic for yourself by taking one of our tours to Corbett national park and enjoy an Indian wildife tour in one of the best wildlife lodges around.
