Alaska bear safari showing playful young bear at Lake Clark national park

Last year I was lucky enough to spend 25 days in Alaska, looking for the best grizzly bear viewing and whale watching tours in the country. Unfortunately I was not able to make it to the iconic Katmai Wilderness Lodge; as this famous property - the only physical lodge allowed to stay in world famous Katmai National Park - is often booked out 1-2 years in advance. This year, I did not want to risk our clients missing out on some of the best grizzly bear viewing in Alaska - so we booked the entire lodge for Wildlife Trails from July 20-24, 2018. This puts us at the lodge in that key mid-July to mid-August period, which is the best time to see grizzly bears in Katmai and Alaska. Consistently rated as the best wildlife lodge in Alaska by our clients, you can be assured of a warm welcome, comfortable accommodation, superb food and some of the best guides to be found in Alaska. Be prepared for long days of bear viewing on the Katmai coast; with packed lunch and a focus on emerging ourselves in some of the most prime bear habitat on this planet. This is a very similar location, to where the BBC filmed 'Wild Alaska' which was only recently on the television in the UK.

This is a Small Group Tour

Two full days free to explore Anchorage, or enjoy fly-in bear safari to iconic locations such as Brooks Falls and Lake Clark (additional cost!). Overnight at the same B&B

  3. July 18

Morning flight from Anchorage to Kodiak, where we will take the free shuttle to the Best Western Kodiak.

  4. July 19

  5. July 20

The excitement builds as we approach the time for our floatplane transfer to the beautifully located Katmai Wilderness Lodge in Katmai national park. On arrival we will receive a warm welcome and enjoy dinner and a chat with our private guide. The entire lodge has been booked for the exclusive use of Wildlife Trails clients.

  6. July 21

Expect action packed long days in the field with packed lunches as we use a small ‘skiff’ to access remote beaches and estuaries where the beautiful Katmai brown bears roam. We always stay together as a group for safety and with the expert guidance of a guide with more than 20 years of experience. Expect close encounters with grizzly bears and some amazing photographic opportunities.

Two full days of grizzly bear action, as we explore the beautiful coastal inlets close to Katmai wilderness lodge.

When appropriate connect with your onward international flight, or continue with a private wildlife extension in Alaska (cost not included).

Cost £5335 per person based on two people sharing and does not include international or domestic flights.

Based on travel in July 2018.

Single supplement £1125. We are always concious of trying to keep the single supplement as low as possible and this is greatly helped by Katami Wilderness Lodges very fair policy of charging NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT.

All our tours, even our small group tours, are designed to be flexible and the only thing on this tour which is not flexible is the dates at Katmai Wilderness Lodge - they are 100% fixed and the only thing which can be changed - very much dependent on availability - is to extend your stay at Katmai Wilderness Lodge to 7 nights, which on a per day rate, comes in at 20% cheaper than the shorter stays.

We are looking at a variety of possible private or small group extensions to this tour, including a stay at a lodge in Lake Clark national park, a road trip down the Kenai Peninsula for whale watching and fly-in bear viewing at Brooks Falls and a first 'proper' visit to Petersburg for 'bubble netting' Humpbacks and breeching behaviour - so many possibilities!

Pssst… pass it on
