Overview

​Sri Lanka safari taking in the whole diversity of the island. Your private tour starts in the little visited town of Kalpitiya, with the chance to see Dolphins in their hundreds; species include Spinner, Rissos, Bottlenose and Indo-Pacific Humpback (‘pink’) dolphin. Whale species see here include Blue Whale, Sperm Whale, Minke Whale and Orca. From this gem on the coast you head north east into the centre of the country to enjoy historic sites such as Dambula and Polonnaruwa; as well as Minneriya, made famous on TV as the best site to see the Elephant Gathering. You then head to Yala for Leopard via Kandy and Hortons Plains. Finally, you head to the beautiful coastal town of Mirissa, now known to be one of the best locations Worldwide for the chance of seeing Blue and Sperm whales. What an incredible end to your bespoke Sri Lanka wildlife tour.

Itinerary

This is a Private Tour

  1. 1

    Arrival in Colombo and transfer 2 hours north to the ‘Bar Reef Resort’ at Kalpitiya

  2. 2

    Dependng on sea conditons, you will enjoy a whale and dolphin spotting excursion by fishing boat

  3. 3

    Drive to Giritale, stopping to visit the Buddha sculpture at Aukana and the Buddhist cave temples at Dambulla. Overnight at ‘Deer Park’

  4. 4

    Morning tour of Polonnaruwa, visit the world famous rock-cut Buddha statues of Gal Vihara and the Parakrama Samudra.  Afternoon private jeep safari inside Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park

  5. 5

    Travel to Udispattuwa, near Kandy, taking some time to explore the citadel of Kandy and its lakeside (if you wish) before checking in at ‘Rangala House’

  6. 6

    Full day free to explore the surrounding Knuckles Range of mountains

  7. 7

    Drive onward to the hill resort of Nuwara Eliya, overnight stay at ‘St Andrews’

  8. 8

    Full day visit to Horton Plains National Park, with walking tour to World’s End.

  9. 9

    Transfer to ‘The Safari’ near Yala, arriving in time for an afternoon private jeep safari.

  10. 10-12

    Three days of morning and afternoon private jeep safaris inside Yala.

  11. 13

    Transfer to the ‘Spice House’ in Mirissa – you may wish to look out for stilt fishermen at Weligama or visit the nearby Wewurukannala Temple

  12. 14

    Early morning start for your whale watching excursion, travelling to the deeper waters off Dondra Point.  Optional visit to Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary near Tangalle

  13. 15

    Transfer back to Colombo with possible stop at Galle to visit the historic fort.

Meals

Accommodation: a private tour throughout, tried and tested hotels and lodges, with upgrade options on request. Half-board throughout, except breakfast only at 'Deer Park' and 'Spice House'.

AC car and driver for round trip transfers.  Private standard safari jeep with local park guide.  It possible to upgrade to a deluxe jeep at Yala, and/ or to be accompanied throughout by a specialist naturalist.

Cost: from £3150 per person based on two sharing or from £2490 per person based on four travelling, (excludes international flights)
