India wildlife holiday, with the chance to see Asiatic lions in Sasan Gir, Gujurat

Indian wildlife tour with the chance for Lions and Leopard
Sasan Gir in Gujurat is a huge conservation success story, like Kaziranga (for Rhino) and Kanha (for Barasingha), with just a tiny population of around 20 Asiatic Lions left in the early 1900’s now numbering more than 350 due to extensive conservation efforts, started initially by the Nawab of Junagadh. The current population is about as large as the park can support. A major relocation/re-introduction to another state currently remains just a dream however. Aside from lions there is a surprising leopard population, this dry teak forest is also home to Sambar & Spotted Deer, Nilgai Antelope, Wild Pig, Common Langur, and a variety of other mammals. It attracts a good variety of birds including Collared Scops & Mottled Wood Owls, and Painted Sand grouse, and both Marsh Muggers and water birds can be spotted at the nearby Kamleshwar Dam. As part of your Indian wildlife tour, it is fascinating to visit one of the small ‘nesses’ that the Maldari tribes that live inside the park erect to keep their cattle and buffalo safe from the Lions which they revere and live in relative harmony with. This is an India wildlife tour which will suit those looking for a change from tiger safaris in India; which can seem a much more 'hectic' wildlife experience by comparison.
