Tiger safaris in Tadoba and Pench small group
9 days from £1940*
Pench National Park is claimed to be the setting for Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book', and certainly a safari here will offer a good chance to see most of the main characters (need to get to Borneo of course to find 'King Louie'!). Fast-forward to more recent times and without any Disney gloss, the park is home to new global stars, such as record-breaking Collarwali Baghin - a now legendary super-tigress, having given birth to no less than 7 litters/ 26 cubs, and experts speculate that at 12 years old she may have at least one more litter. Beginning simply as T15, the daughter of another superstar tigress called Barimada (featured in the BBC 'Spy in the Jungle' series), the tigress became Collarwali after a radio collar was fiited in 2009, just 4 tigers were collared, but T15 became the most visible and the name has stuck despite the collar having fallen off in 2016.
Pench is however not all about tigers; with larger water bodies and varying terrain types you should larger mixed herds of herbivores (gaur, sambar, spotted deer and of course langurs keeping watch above), the bird list is impressive, and you have a realistic chance of sighting dhole (wild dog), leopards and sloth bear.
