Overview

Combine Indian tiger safaris at Tadoba National Park with the Asiatic Lions inside Sasan Gir National Park for an ultimate big cat safari with Wildlife Trails.  Tadoba is firmly on the map for tiger enthusiasts, accessible from Nagpur which has named itself the 'tiger capital of India' - being surrounded by several prime Tiger Reserves (including Pench, Nagzira, Kanha and Tadoba).  The ease of access does make it a popular day-out for local weekend visitors but to enjoy it at its best, come during the week not only for a realistic chance of tiger sightings but for the greater diversity that this park offers.  The resident tigers are often found close to the network of water holes that have been provided within the park (particularly as the dry season progresses), and have become habituated to the presence of vehicles as they drink, bathe and stalk their prey.  While close to 60 tigers are known in the park, it is 5 or 6 'star tigers' that are encountered more regularly by visitors.  Aside from tigers there is a good chance to find wild dog (dhole), Indian bison (gaur), various deer and antelope species including the rare four-horned, and several lucky guests have added leopards to their list, the varied terrain attracts a good variety of birds (woodland and riverine) - more than 200 are listed.

Sasan Gir (also known as Gir Forest National Park) is simply unique being the only true remaining stronghold for the Asiatic lions.  In appearance there are a number of differences from their African cousins, most notably being smaller in size and with a skin fold running along the length of their bellies, the males also have sparser manes so much so that their ears are always visible.  Prides are also much smaller, with often just 2 or 3 females and the males socialising far less, possibly due to the smaller prey species availble - less co-operation needed in hunting.  Aside from the lions, resident mammals include various deer and antelope species, wild boar, jackal, leopard and a number of lesser cat species.  More than 300 bird species are listed and the park is also home to a very successful marsh mugger crocodile conservation project.  Again this park is busier at the weekends and near festival dates, being the only place to find the Asiatic lions in the wild, and with a limit on vehicle numbers, the park entry fees are higher than at the tiger reserves. Plan your big cat safari in advance with the expert help of Wildlife Trails.
