Overview

India wildlife tour visiting Kaziranga National Park in Assam

Wildlife Trails first visited Kaziranga in 2002 as part of an Indian wildlife holiday which took in several National Parks. We were excited to see firsthand one of the most successful conservation schemes in the world - the population of Indian One Horned Rhino here has rebounded from less than 20 indivudals to over a thousand (now nearly two thousand) and could even then be from the boundary as you approached the park (only Chitwan in Nepal compares). There was so much else to see both inside the park and in nearby forest reserves adjoining the boundaries; including tiger (hard to see here; best change on the central zone), wild elephant, Gangetic dolphin, 4 species of hornbill and hoolock gibbon.

On the flood plains of the Brahmaputra River; the grasslands are interspersed with large bodies of water. The areas of ‘elephant grass’ grow very tall (tall enough to hide an elephant!), and are managed by a process of strategic burning during early spring. The wildlife safaris here are quite different to most of Indian parks, with the early morning longer elephant safaris (strong focus on seeing Rhinos!) followed up with the afternoon jeep safari and a choice of visiting the three ranges: central, western and eastern; each of them providing a different habitat and experience.  The nearby Gibbon Reserve is also home to more than 200 bird species, and several other primates including Assamese Macaque, Pigtailed Macaque and Stump tailed Macaque, but the resident Bengal slow-Loris and Chinese pangolin may very predictably elude you. A bespoke Indian wildlife tour for the first timer to India or seasoned pro.
